Pennridge holds off Bensalem
Andrew Marcus, Sportswriter

After Pennridge's first two possessions on Friday night, you would have thought they'd break every school rushing record possible. But Suburban One League opponent, Bensalem, hung in tough and was 20 yards and 20 seconds away from a comeback victory when Pennridge picked off the Owls to hold on to improve to 2-0 with a 28-26 victory.
"We came out strong in the first half and played well," coach Randy Cuthbert said. "We made mistakes in the second half and let them back in it."
After a Ryan Metzler's 12-yard touchdown run on the opening drive, Pennridge elected to show whose house they were in and attempted an onside kick. The Rams got the good bounce to recover and then handed it to running back Jesse Knepp to do the rest.
The Pennridge faithful was watching this strong kid with a quick burst run touchdowns of 20 and 44 yards and started to wonder where was this playmaking tailback was last year.
Knepp was on the freshman team and the sophomore lit up the field for 150 yards on the ground on 11 carries.
"Jesse's a big play guy," Cuthbert said. "He's only a sophomore, but he's fast and can also run through a lot of tackles."
Pennridge had its own playmaking runner to deal with in the Owls' Camryn Lasalle. Lasalle got stronger as the game went on and his ability to gush the Rams' defense for five yards a carry helped keep his team in it.
"He's an excellent player (Lasalle) and in the second half he started converting on third downs," Cuthbert said. "We knew we would struggle with him. We had a bend, but don't break philosophy with him."
Lasalle finished the night with 38 tough carries for 189 yards and three touchdowns.
It didn't help either that Pennridge became sloppy in the second half. A botched punt, an interception, and fumble all led to Bensalem scores.
Lasalle's third score on the night drew the Owls within two points with two minutes left, but Rams' captain, Matt Pattison stood up Lasalle to deny the conversion.
"When it counted we made the play, but it really shouldn't have been that close," Cuthbert said.
The Rams struggled to pick up a first down and were backed in their own territory, so Cuthbert had no other choice but to punt the ball away and leave it up to the defense.
Bensalem signal caller, Ron Vogelei, completed an 18-yard pass to Tom Vogelei to give the Owls a chance to pull out the comeback. With 20 seconds left and 20 yards away from the end zone it was go big or go home.
Vogelei rolled out, tried to thread the needle, but defensive back Zach Knepp stepped in front of the pass in the end zone to seal the Rams' victory.
"I was excited when my brother picked it," Jesse Knepp said. "It was a big play. I never expected it to be this close. We have to go back to work and clean up some things on defense." d text.
